Simon, Jules

(1814-1896)
   political figure, philosopher
Born in Lorient, Jules François Simon Suisse, or Jules Simon as he is known, a professor of philosophy, was recognized for his Histoire critique de l'école d'Alexandrie (1844-45). In 1851, he was suspended from his post at the university of Paris for having refused to take an oath of loyalty to the second empire. A republican deputy (1863-70), he published several studies on the condition of workers (L'Ouvrière, 1863; Le Travail, 1860) and, after the fall of the second empire, was appointed minister of public instruction (September 1870). As head of the government, he had to resign because of the crisis of May 16, 1877. Simon took a position against the educational policy of jules ferry and against Boulangism. He was elected to the Académie Française in 1875 (see george boulanger).
